Background

India has a large pool of young talent that has fuelled its steady economic growth. The talent pool requires to be nurtured and augmented with new skills. The Government of India has also emphasized the need of imparting requisite skills under the flagship programme of ‘Skill India. The field of materials and metallurgical engineering is projected to be of enormous importance for the progress and growth of the country. Young practitioners of this field, therefore, require to be imparted with better skill-sets. In order to fulfill this objective, several leading institutions of the country, namely the Jamshedpur Chapter of the IIM, NIT Jamshedpur, Tata Steel Limited and CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML) have been working together to nurture and mentor young metallurgists and inspire them to flourish into dedicated professionals. This annual Students' Seminar has been initiated to provide a common platform for promising and aspiring metallurgists to interact with the pool of experts from industries, R&D centers and academic institutes. The student participants of this event will get an opportunity to update their current knowledgebase, and share their academic achievements, innovative thoughts and new ideas in the field of metallurgy and materials technology.

About the Seminar

Since its inception in the year 2012, the seminar "Behind the Teacher's Desk (BTTD)“ has blossomed into one of the most sought after event among the student fraternity of India. BTTD is held annually at the CSIR-NML Jamshedpur, and attracts more than 200 students from across the country. The event provides a launch pad to the students for showcasing themselves and interacting with scientists, eminent metallurgists, engineers and entrepreneurs so as to develop new skills in the field of metallurgy and materials technology.

Target Participants

  • UG and PG students working in the domain of materials and metallurgical engineering
  • Scientists, faculty members, industry professionals who would like to interact with students

Awards and Certificates

All registered student delegates will receive certificates of participation. Papers and posters presented in each technical session will be judged by experts. Best speaker and best posters will be awarded with attractive prizes for every technical session. Grand prize will be given to the best presentation among all the technical sessions.

Industrial and Laboratory Visit

Industrial and Laboratory visits on September 06, 2019:

  • Visit to CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory
  • Visit to metallurgical industries in Jamshedpur(for selected number of outstation students)
  • An new event on “Industrial problem solving”
  • Cultural evening and networking dinner

Social and Cultural Functions

Participants of the BTTD-2018 are invited to join the cultural evening to be held on September 05, 2019. Students are encouraged to take part in the cultural events so that they may strike up and strengthen networking among students.

Accepted abstract will be placed for oral or poster presentation based upon the theme and the number of abstract selected for presentation. The abstract should be classified under one of the following topics listed below:

  • Mineral processing, raw materials & Metal extraction
  • Materials processing and characterization
  • Damage mechanisms and Failure analysis
  • Advanced materials and processes
  • Modelling and simulation of materials and metallurgical processes
  • Energy, environment, recycling and waste utilization
  • Entrepreneurship and startup ideas in metallurgical and materials engineering

Abstracts on novel and innovative ideas, such as development of new structural materials, advanced coating techniques, novel solutions for waste utilization etc., are most desirable. Emphasis on Iron & Steel: processing, products and applications, will be given preference.

Abstracts submitted must contain a title of the abstract and the authors’ affiliations. Professors and mentors may be acknowledged, but their names may not be included as authors. Students are requested not to use slides and information from the web verbatim. Originality in abstract/presentations will be a criterion for acceptance.
